THAI POLICE are cooperating with their US counterparts in the hunt for a group involved in a “large-scale highly sophisticated sex-trafficking scheme” in which hundreds of Thai women were forced to work as prostitutes in the US.
About a dozen people were recently apprehended in cities across the US for running the operation.

A Thai woman, Sumalee Intarathong, 55, suspected of being the organisation's boss, was arrested in Belgium in August.

US police have contacted the Anti-Trafficking in Person Division about the case, deputy police commissioner General Srivara Ransibrahmanakulhas said, adding that a team has been set up to check the backgrounds of Thais indicted in the US over the case.

He said police were trying to determine whether Sumalee had been involved in illegal issues in Thailand.

"We want to know if the organisation has any connection with other Thais in the country," Srivara said.

Meanwhile, US authorities said on Wednesday they had shut down a sex trafficking ring and charged 17 people in a case stretching from Thailand to various major US cities.

Twelve Thai nationals and five Americans were charged with illegally transporting hundreds of women from Thailand and forcing them into prostitution in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC and other cities.

"The 17 people charged in this indictment ran a highly sophisticated sex trafficking scheme," US Attorney Andrew Luger of the District of Minnesota said in a statement. "They promised women in Thailand a chance at the American dream, but instead exploited them, coerced them and forced them to live a nightmare. In short, the victims lived like modern day sex slaves," he added.

According to the indictment, the organisation targeted poor women who spoke little English, and promised them a better life in the US at a debt of US$40,000 to $60,000 (Bt1.4 million to Bt2.09 million).

It said the women were required to repay the debt through forced prostitution, working long hours every day.

The women were not allowed to retain any of their earnings while paying off their debt, and were "owned" by Sumalee.

All but four of those charged have been arrested, officials said.

US prosecutors seek more Thai suspects in sex ring case
US prosecutors are urging closer cooperation with local police to expand their investigations into a trafficking ring they claim involved hundreds of Thai women being sold into "sexual slavery".

"This is a hierarchical organisation," US assistant attorney Laura Provinzino told US Public Radio. "We hope to work with police in Thailand to identify additional people involved in the trafficking and more of the victims."
Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt!

CHONBURI — A man was hauled out of his bedroom by a mob Tuesday, beaten and forced to apologize to a portrait of His Majesty the Late King for allegedly posting content defaming the monarchy on social media.

It was a scene that has played out in the past week in several provinces, where vigilantes have assaulted or harassed individuals accused of insulting King Bhumibol, the widely revered monarch who died at 88 on Thursday. Many of the incidents were filmed and spread on social media, drawing further condemnation of the victims.
http://www.khaosodenglish.com/wp-conten ... i.mob_.jpg
Egal wer gerade regiert!

A photo later circulated on social media showed Jirawat in the back of a police vehicle, but the officer in charge of the case would not discuss the case other than to say police are investigating it.

“We don’t know details for sure yet. The matter is still under investigation,” Capt. Somsak Jailae of Phan Thong Police Station said. He referred the reporter to his supervisor, station chief Preecha Somsathan. Preecha said he was in a meeting and could not comment on the case.

Business as usual.

While the government has been publicizing efforts to win extradition of exiles accused of violating the royal defamation law, the formernational police chief today made it clear they shouldn’t be in the kingdom.

“If they don’t have the money for airfare then come get it from me,” said Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda. “Those who insult the monarchy … I am willing to be in debt for the country!”

in Thaksins garnicht komischer Nulpentruppe gibt,
ist in Pattaya Business as usual angesagt:
PATTAYA — Wednesday marked the seventh day to pass since a policeman allegedly kidnapped, extorted and raped a bar worker in Pattaya without being arrested.

Although an arrest warrant was issued for Sgt. Maj. Kittikhun Fonrueng four days ago for the alleged Oct. 19 assault, police have not arrested the sergeant major because he needed time to raise money for a bail bond, the chief investigator of Pattaya City police said.He was looking for assets for his bond, because he had a warrant on him, after he surrenders himself he would need to post a bond,” Col. Chatchapol Pattarasiriporn said by telephone Wednesday.
Kittikhun previously told his fellow police officers that he would turn himself in Tuesday but failed to appear, postponing his surrender to Wednesday, Chatchapol said, adding that he’s optimistic that the fugitive policeman would surrender by the day’s end.

Kittikhun would not be charged for defying the warrant, Chatchapol said.

Kittikhun and two police volunteers stand accused of kidnapping a bar worker in Pattaya on Oct. 19 in a hotel room and demanding she pay 20,000 baht in ransom money. According to the victim, she told the three men she had no money at which point they sexually assaulted her and released her from detention a day later.

The acting chief of Huai Khwang police station and three other senior officers were on Sunday transferred to inactive posts pending investigation after soldiers raided a gambling den and caught 32 gamblers on Saturday night.

The four police officers are Pol Col Nakarin Sukontawit, the acting station chief; Pol Lt Col Prapoj Anusiri, an acting deputy chief for crime suppression; Pol Lt Col Jeerapon Prapanchan, an acting deputy chief for crime investigation; and Pol Lt Gen Surayut Mekmungkorn, a police inspector in charge of crime suppression.

The transfer order was signed by Pol Lt Gen Sanit Mahathavorn, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau. It transferred the officers to the MPB’s operations centre for 30 days, effective immediately, or until further orders.

Fifteen soldiers from a peace-keeping task force raided an entertainment venue named Carnation on Thiam Ruam Mit road in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district at 9.30pm on Saturday after they received complaints from residents in the area that the place was being used for playing a high-low dice game.

The team rounded up 32 gamblers and seized 180,063 baht in cash, three sets of gambling equipment, a 9mm handgun, and five communication radio sets.

The first two of the four officers facing transfer were originally attached to the MPB’s Division 1 and Samsen station. But they were moved to Huai Kwang temporarily after the Huai Khwang station chief, a deputy station chief, and two police inspectors were abruptly transferred to inactive posts pending an investigation that followed a raid on Nataree massage parlor on Ratchadaphisek Road in June in which more than 120 sex workers were detained.

The four officers relocated in the Nataree massage parlour scandal have not yet been reinstated.

In jeder halbwegs seriösen Polizei würden wirklich Köpfe rollen,
Warum wohl?

Critics are demanding city police chief Sanit Mahathavorn give up his job as adviser to major alcoholic beverage producer Thai Beverage Plc, after he declared he receives a monthly payment of 50,000 baht from the firm.

The payment is shown in Pol Lt Gen Sanit's list of assets and liabilities that he recently declared to the National Anti-Corruption Committee (NACC) as a member of the National legislative Assembly (NLA). The record shows he began receiving the monthly stipend last year.
The news from the NACC was released in the middle of a long holiday weekend, when it is guaranteed to attract the least possible notice.

Somchai Armin, chairman of the Lawyers Association for Rights and Environment Protection, called on Pol Lt Gen Sanit to resign from the advisory role as it represents a conflict of interest.

Mr Somchai provided no reason for failing to call for Pol Lt Gen Sanit to resign from the police.

Pol Lt Gen Sanit was not available for comment as of the press time Sunday and it is not clear what advice he has offered to the firm.

What the officer is doing conflicts with good governance and transparency practices, Mr Somchai said. "This senior officer is serving as an adviser to ThaiBev when it is his duty to ensure enforcement of the Alcohol Control Act and other related laws," he said. All alcoholic beverage companies must be reined in by the act, and the law will be harder to enforce if there is any interference or conflict of interest, Mr Somchai said.

If high-ranking officials are allowed to do this, those occupying lower ranks would follow suit, he said.

He said he is sure other officials also take up positions in private companies which have not yet been disclosed.

"Although this is not illegal, before taking up any position, officials must use their discretion to do the right thing and uphold ethics," Mr Somchai said.

Civil servants, particularly high-ranking executives, must set a good example so they are not a subject of criticism, he added.

Citizens still waiting for reform of rotten police force
December 14, 2016
Thai police officers found to have committed illegal acts are typically shunted to a new post instead of being stripped of their rank and tried in a court of law.

Worse, some of these criminals in uniform have been “recycled” through the police force again and again. And worse still, some have been promoted to more powerful and important positions.

This is the most deplorable and seemingly illegal act that could occur in any national law-enforcement force. And it is the chief reason why the Thai police force is one of the most ineffective and corruption-plagued forces in the world.

Law-abiding Thais are still waiting for the Prayut Chan-o-cha government to recognise this social malady, and begin reforming the police in a serious manner.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) wants to annul admission exam results as it is suspected many applicants cheated.

A selection committee and representatives from police agencies mostly agreed to "nullify the exam results", said MPB chief Sanit Mahathavorn, who chaired their meeting on Friday.

National police chief Chakthip Chaijinda will be asked to have the final say, Pol Lt Gen Sanit said.

Police investigators suspect some applicants who are studying at top departments of universities might have been involved in the scam, giving the correct answers to other applicants. The test was used to hopefully recruit 1,000 people to be trained as police officers.

A total of 13,285 people applied online to sit the exam on Dec 4 last year. About 1,800 of them passed the written exam and had already passed physical tests. They were having their qualifications checked by judges to make the final selection when the alleged cheating was detected.

An initial check found no flaws in steps to prepare the exam paper and its distribution, acting deputy national police chief Pol Gen Detnarong Sutthichanbancha said, citing the Police Education Bureau.

A probe was subsequently launched to focus largely on an exam cheating gang among the applicants.

A check on the answer sheets of 50 applicants with the lowest scores found some of their answers did not seem to match with the remainder of the test.

Some scored as low as 13 out of 150 even though this group of applicants had an adequate educational background, Royal Thai Police deputy spokesman Songphon Watthanachai said.

A closer look at their exam papers found some maths calculations and correct answers which were written in "unusually large letters and numbers" which could be seen from a long distance, Pol Maj Gen Songphon said.

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) has confirmed that metropolitan police chief Sanit Mahathavorn is not violating police rules by holding an advisory role with a major alcohol conglomerate.

Pol Lt Gen Sanit has been receiving a monthly payment of 50,000 baht from Thai Beverage Plc as an adviser to the firm since 2015, according to his assets declared to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

Police deputy spokesman Piyapan Pingmuang said Wednesday that based on the RTP's rules, police officers are not prohibited from holding an advisory role in a company. However, it is up to Pol Lt Gen Sanit himself to explain whether advising an alcohol beverage producer could be seen as a breach of ethics, Pol Maj Gen Piyapan said. This is his personal issue and he may have to decide what to do himself, the deputy spokesman added.
