#1 Neuer Riverwalk in Bangkok!

BANGKOK RESIDENTS may be able to utilise a new walkway and park areas along the Chao Phraya River by the end of 2017, city governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday.
The project area covers both sides of the river from the Rama VIII Bridge to the Pinklao Bridge and is 14 kilometres long totally.

The Urban Design and Development Centre (UDDC), an agency under Chulalongkorn University's architecture faculty, has spent the last three years researching, planning and designing the Yannawa Riverfront Project. This urban renewal prototype combines the development of recreational land with a flood prevention scheme along the Chao Phraya River so as to bring recreational activities to the inner-city area. With a good-quality bike lane and walkway, the project hopes to reduce the permanently clogged traffic on Charoen Krung Road, which runs a mere 200 metres from the waterfront.

Originally named the Saphan Pla Project - or the Bangkok Fishery Pier Project in English - the scheme was later renamed the Yannawa Riverfront to eliminate the ambiguity concerning the size of the project, of which the Bangkok Fishery Pier is only part.

The project stretches 1.2 kilometres from Taksin Bridge to Wat Yannawa, Wat Suthiwararam, the Bangkok Fishery Pier Organisation and the Bangkok Dock and takes in more than 100 privately owned-properties.

bike lane and walkway
reduce the permanently clogged traffic on Charoen Krung Road
:?:

BANGKOK — City Hall today revived a plan to build a pedestrian and bicycle bridge spanning Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River.

Forty-nine million baht will be spent to study the construction of a walkway and cycling lane linking Rattanakosin Island to the Thonburi side between the Tha Prachan and Wang Lang piers.

The bridge would provide a safer alternative to ferries for pedestrians and also serve a recreational function, Pransan Pitakworarat of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said.

First mentioned in 2010, the project was never brought forward.

Pransan said there will the feasibility study would include possible impacts to the environment.

More than a dozen bridges currently span the Chao Phraya throughout metropolitan Bangkok, and another 10 are planned over the next two decades.

Radwege in Ratanakossin!
Radfahrer meist Fehlanzeige!

Conflict sparked Tuesday as government and activists could not agree on the approved Chao Phraya boardwalk project.

It was a day of competing announcements, as the military government promoted the next step toward building the 14-billion baht boardwalk along the river, while activists vowed to campaign against it and urged authorities to move forward transparently and with public participation.

“We are concerned that the seven-months for the feasibility study and public hearings is not enough for a conclusion that can answer all of society’s questions,” Friends of the River wrote in its statement.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, or BMA, on Tuesday held a joint news conference at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and Khon Kaen University, the two universities contracted to conduct the 120-million baht feasibility study.

Both university teams chosen for the project said they are equipped with the technology and expertise to develop a design that will develop the river, economically and culturally. Friends of the River, an unpaid group of volunteer architects, environmental activists and community activists, say the project would destroy centuries of river heritage – and look ugly.

Bangkok is taking another step toward its ideal look as the Urban Design and Development Centre (UDDC) has drawn up another bold plan to preserve three original neighbourhoods in Bangkok, citing they have historical and cultural value and unique identities.

The conservation plan is part of City Hall's ambitious so-called "Bangkok250" project, aimed at making the city more liveable and exciting, to commemorate its 250th anniversary in 2032.

The latest proposal by the UDDC, called "Bangkok250²", is for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to improve three neighbourhoods: Tha Phra Chan-Tha Chang-Tha Tian; Yothi-Ratchawithi; and Thong Lor-Ekamai.

Speaking at a meeting chaired by deputy Bangkok governor Jumpol Sampaopol, UDDC director Niramon Kulsrisombat proposed the pilot project for the BMA to improve these neighbourhoods as the first features a high concentration of historical and cultural sites that should be conserved while the infrastructure and facilities in the second area needs improvement. The third neighbourhood is to be optimised.

In the first neighbourhood, Tha Phra Chan, Tha Chang and Tha Tian are home to famous temples, including Wat Pho, Wat Chana Songkhram, Wat Mahathat, Wat Kalayanamit and the Grand Palace, as well as several decades-old communities that need preserving.

"Things need to be done to make these areas are more appealing. Once improved, we believe the hidden gems of Bangkok will attract the attention of tourists, generating income for the government," she said.

Ms Niramon suggested that City Hall improve five locations in the first neighbourhood.

The first is the pavement near Tha Phra Chan. The restaurants, stalls, and kiosks will have to be appropriately designated to allow pedestrians to walk and use the shared space freely.

The second is landscape improvements at Tha Chang and nearby locations to increase public access and for setting up spaces for tourism-related activities.

The third involves infrastructure and facility improvements around the Navy Club and Ratcha Woradit Pier which embraces several historical sites in order to allow people to appreciate Thai history and culture more.

The fourth project include adding riverside public spaces and introducing footpaths connecting them, while transforming Children's Centre Baan Pranee, which has been abandoned for years, into a learning centre of the future is part of the fifth project.

Ms Niramon said the Rattanakosin area has a high potential to become a tourist attraction, citing low population density -- 2,813 persons per sq km compared to 7,737 persons per sq km in Singapore, 9,800 persons per sq km in Istanbul and 19,380 persons per sq km in Paris.
