[quote]TWO FORMER top executives of state-owned Krungthai Bank were each sentenced to 18 years in jail yesterday for approving a questionable loan of more than Bt9 billion to a property company.
The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders gave the lengthy imprisonment term to KTB's former president Viroj Nualkhair and former board chairman Suchai Chaovisit, in addition to 17 others who were also convicted in the case.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was the first defendant in this case, was among the 27 people charged. But the court has suspended the case against him because he has fled the country.

The court also ordered Thaksin's arrest in order for him to stand trial in the case.

At the risk of being howled down - but this is a genuine question - what part in this is Thaksin accused of playing?

From an earlier published Nation article;

"The central claim of the prosecution is that then prime minister Thaksin abused his office to influence the bank's decision to grant loans to real-estate developer Krisda Mahanakorn despite the company's poor credit rating.

The alleged fraudulent deals happened when Viroj Nualkhair, one of the key defendants, was the managing director of KTB.

The deals allegedly involved a scam to bypass the credit rating to allow the bank to arrange loans to proxy companies in order to channel funds to Krisda Mahanakorn. The transactions were subsequently classified as non-performing loans.

The list of defendants can be divided into three groups: Thaksin, as office holder exerting influence over the loans; Viroj and the bank's board of directors; and three companies including Krisda Mahanakorn."

This is also an interesting bit of info from the same article regarding Thaksin's son in this matter;

"Earlier, the graft investigation found that funds from the alleged fraudulent loans had been routed through Panthongtae's bank accounts. The prosecution has decided, however, not to try Panthongtae, who is not an office holder and thus not under the purview of the high court's fast-track process for graft offences"http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/851 ... hai-viroj/

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politic ... 73430.html
FORMER national police chief Sereepisuth Temeeyaves has been charged along with seven others for allegedly creating public disorder and broadcasting without permission. The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) filed the complaint with police yesterday.
Military officers, led by Lt-Colonel Burin Thongprapai of the Judge Advocate-General's Office, raided Fahai TV in Nontahburi's Pak Kret district on Wednesday.

The action followed the station's broadcast of the Sereepisuth-hosted "Seree Voice", a TV show the officers allege contained content in which Sereepisuth threatened national security by creating public disorder. The officers said the station was unlicensed.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has sent an early New Year message, wishing for the return of democracy in Thailand -- a move quickly countered with a warning from a key cabinet minister. With...
"Please be a bit patient, because no one can defy democracy," he said from an unknown location. Rights and freedoms of citizens were being curbed, but these restrictions would eventually end, he said,...

Herzlichen Glueckwunsch!

Gut so!

Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra told Thais on Friday to have "the strength to pass obstacles" and warned about the economy, which has been struggling since a 2014 coup.

Thaksin, who lives abroad to avoid a jail sentence handed down for graft in 2008, has kept messages to the public to a minimum since the military toppled the remnants of the government of his sister, Yingluck, last year. This New Year I want to wish all things holy to my brothers and sisters I want you to have the strength to pass obstacles because next year the economy is not that good for the whole world and for Thailand," Thaksin said in a voice recording posted on son Panthongtae Shinawatra's Facebook page.

"But I believe that with every bad situation there are starting to be opportunities and I want you to see them."

I hope that I will be able to prostrate and feel the land of my home country again.

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/new/201 ... 01_big.jpg
"Get ready for a general election to be held soon," Thaksin said on Sunday via a video call made to a group of former Pheu Thai MPs who joined a Chinese New Year celebration organised by Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan at her residence in the Lat Pla Khao area.

The former prime minister also said Pheu Thai members in Bangkok have a team leader in Sudarat, who is a "competent lady".

He also has branded the draft constitution as "shoddy" and claimed it would cause the country to become "backward - like Myanmar and North Korea".

"The draft constitution is shoddy, giving too much power to the Constitutional Court. This will lead the country to be backward like Myanmar and North Korea," he said.

"I left home 10 years ago but our country has stepped back 20 years,'' Thaksin said. He also harshly criticised the junta.

The fugitive ex-PM said Pheu Thai had a good chance of returning to power.
