A friend of mine recently went to renew his driving license and was told that a foreigner with a non-immigrant O-A visa could not get a five-year renewal anymore, but only a one-year renewal.
Is that true?

I am sorry to hear about your friend’s experience, but it is true – foreigners staying in Thailand on non-immigrant O-A visas are permitted to hold a Thai driver’s license valid for one year only.
The rules have never changed. After I moved to the PLTO, I discovered that many foreigners on O-A visas in Phuket had been mistakenly issued five-year licenses.
Instead of calling for all these people to come in and be re-issued one-year licenses, I thought it best just to replace the licenses as the foreigners came to renew their permits one by one.
Please do not be confused by foreigners staying in Thailand on non-immigrant B [Business] visas. Foreigners who have work permits are permitted to have five-year licenses.
“To renew your driver’s license, you must apply at the PLTO in person.
If you have a work permit, you do not need a letter from immigration confirming your address. Just bring your work permit and copies of the relevant pages of the work permit.
However, if you do not have a work permit, we require the letter from immigration confirming your address.
You also need to bring your previous driver’s license and your passport (plus copies), and a doctor’s certificate verifying that you are physically fit to drive.
We no longer require you to bring two one-inch photos as we have a camera that can transfer your photo directly onto the new license.
Charges are as follows:
• One-year motorbike driver’s license: 155 baht
• One-year car driver’s license: 205 baht.
• Five-year motorbike driver’s license: 355 baht.........
