Abhisit pleased with 2-year performance
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, elated by the economic achievement of his government in the past two years, promised to further emphasise on three areas - easing of cost of living, welfare extension and infrastructure investment.
To ease cost of living, the government promises free electricity to the poor and freeze of cooking gas prices as well as measures to control food prices - expected to be announced in January. The property and land tax law, under the Council of State's screening, should further help the poor.
"This will require a very small budget," he said at the Government House today.
On welfare, the system will be extended to cover the beneficiaries' spouses and children. He floats the idea of supporting nurseries at office and putting up nurseries at all villages. On the card is the national pension fund, now being vetted by a House Committee.
On infrastructure, the high-speed train joint investment with China was highlighted, as well as the broadband internet to cover 40 million population in the next five years.
"No matter when the House is resolved, we're determined to proceed with this. We took office when the economy was in bad shape amid political turbulence. We passed all that well," he said, adding the economy this year will expand near 8 per cent from 2.33 per cent contraction last year and 2.48 per cent growth rate in 2008.
Success was seen in the historical prices of commodity products like corn, tapioca, rubber and palm oil; the highest stock market index in 14 years, and recovery in tourism industry.
During the past two years, the government introduced a number of measures to boost the economy. Under the Thai Khemkhaeng scheme, 2,900 schools have been upgraded while 3,163 km of dust-free road was constructed across the Kingdom. On water resource development, the government has spent Bt46 billion, and another Bt15 billion on health condition improvement.
Of all measures the government have introduced, he said the 15-year free education covering 12.5 million students is the most favourite, trailed by the allowances to the elderly and healthcare volunteers.
