Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has affirmed that she will not flee justice and is ready to face a possible conviction that could lead to her imprisonment.

Ms Yingluck has been charged with dereliction of duty for failing to stop corruption and irregularities stemming from her government's rice-pledging scheme. The final hearing for defence witnesses is scheduled for July 21.

After that, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions will specify dates for both the plaintiff and defendant to deliver their closing statements, which normally occur from one week to no later than one month after testimony in cases concludes.

The court is expected to hand down a ruling by September. If found guilty, Ms Yingluck could face a jail term of up to 10 years.

Embattled former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra claimed Wednesday the government froze her bank accounts, shortly after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha vowed her assets would not be seized until a court ruling was delivered on her rice scheme case.

Using Twitter to escalate the war of words between her and the military regime, Ms Yingluck implied that Gen Prayut, as head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), had either not been informed of the move or had deliberately misled the public.

Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra remained on good spirit after delivering her closing statement at the Supreme Court on Tuesday morning, in a case linked to her then-government’s controversial rice-pledging scheme.

Dressed in black, Yingluck walked from the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division on Political Office Holders at about 10.45am, after taking about an hour to read the statement.

She smiled as she approached her supporters, with hundreds on hand to give her moral support, and she shook their hands. The crowd kept shouting, “Yingluck, fight on.”

She briefly spoke to the media and said thank you.

Yingluck was charged with negligence for allegedly failing to prevent corruption and irregularities in the rice-pledging scheme.

But she insisted she is innocent and had only tried to help farmers.

Her lawyer said her closing statement has 20 pages and covers six aspects.

Hundreds of crowd control police from the Metropolitan Police Bureau were deployed at the Supreme Court. Fences were erected in front of the court.

The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division on Political Office Holders is set to deliver its verdict on August 25.

Yingluck would have the right to appeal to the Supreme Court if the verdict goes against her, provided the draft bill on criminal procedures against political office-holders is enacted in time to cover her case.

Yingluck Shinawatra delivered a tearful closing statement to a Bangkok court on Tuesday, saying she did not act dishonestly in a multi-billion dollar rice subsidy scheme and that she was being politically persecuted.

Ms Yingluck argued the rice scheme, which eventually cost Thailand $8 billion, benefited average Thais.

"The rice policy has been proven to benefit the economy at the grass roots level and nationwide. It did not cause losses. Which is why I intended to make this rice scheme work," Ms Yingluck told the court.

"The rice scheme was honest and correct," she added.
ihren hochwertigen oekologisch wertvollen Jasmin Reis

Bt13 billion seized in rice pledge case, says AMLO

national August 19, 2017 01:00

By THE NATION

Days before Yingluck verdict, anti-money laundering office boasts of assets frozen in relation to high-profile scandal.

LESS THAN a week before the Supreme Court delivers its verdict in the negligence case against ex-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) yesterday boasted about its success in seizing or freezing almost Bt13 billion in assets from offenders in a case stemming from the rice-pledging scandal.

AMLO secretary-general Chaiya Siriampankul said the case was among the 19 high-profile cases in which the agency followed a money trail and provided public prosecutors with information to seek court orders for confiscation of assets from offenders.

Over the past year, AMLO’s work has led to the seizure or freezing of more than Bt40 billion from offenders in those criminal and corruption cases, less than 10 per cent of the total estimated damages of Bt469 billion, according to the agency’s chief.

Chaiya told a press conference that one of the high-profile cases stemmed from the previous government’s rice-pledging scheme. The scandal led to more than 100 related cases involving estimated damages of Bt405 billion.

AMLO so far has managed to seize assets from people involved in only one of those sub-cases – Bt12.91 billion from wealthy businessman Apichart Chansakulporn, who is better known as “Sia Piang”, and three others, who were accused of involvement in “fake” government-to-government rice-sale deals.

Judgement day

The highest court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders is scheduled to deliver its verdict in Yingluck’s case on Friday.
Gold,Aktien) in Thailand.

The army began setting up checkpoints on all key roads leading to Bangkok Monday to screen people heading to the capital as fears grow the Supreme Court could turn into a staging ground for political rallies on Friday at the conclusion of ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra’s rice scheme trial.

Checkpoints are also being constructed in provincial areas and plainclothes police dispatched to provide security outside the capital, authorities said.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said he was not expecting any trouble on Friday before the ruling is handed down but trouble could flare up afterwards.

Some 3,000 supporters of the former premier are expected to arrive at the court later this week to provide a morale-boost as she faces a malfeasance charge for dereliction of duty over a rice-pledging scheme the government claims has cost it at least 500 million baht.

Around 1,000 of her fans turned up for each of her last two court appearances in recent weeks. Several van operators were prosecuted for ferrying supporters to the court to hear her closing statement on Aug 1. They were fined for breaching land transport regulations and warned against transporting politically affiliated passengers in future.

Despite criticism from pro-Thaksin camps that the authorities have over-reacted in clamping down on her supporters, the Royal Thai Police said Monday they will press ahead with strict security measures.

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) said soldiers from all three branches of the military will reinforce the police in their mission to prevent any acts of social disorder.

Outside Bangkok, officers are tasked with looking for potential „troublemakers“ among Ms Yingluck’s supporters.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) has decided to increase the number of officers in and around the court on Friday from 2,500 to 4,000. They will be supported by three helicopters, 20 riot-control vehicles and four ambulances, said Pol Maj Gen Phanurat Lakbun, the deputy MPB chief.

The checkpoints, which will be jointly set up by police and state officials across various regions, are not intended to block people but „prevent possible attempts by a party to instigate an unpleasant situation“, said deputy police spokesman Kritsana Pattanacharoen.

Officers are also keeping a close watch on the pro-Thaksin red-shirt group, the staunchest ally of Ms Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party.

The wife of red-shirt leader Kwanchai Sarakham, who lives in Udon Thani, and two other people are reportedly preparing to be at the court on Friday, according to Pol Maj Gen Phiraphong Wongsaman, the Udon Thani police chief.

Kwanchai was sentenced last year by the Supreme Court in absentia to two years in jail after he was found guilty of leading an attack against a rival political group in 2008.

The red-shirt group’s actions have been subdued since the 2014 coup but authorities have maintained a closer watch on Udon Thani, which is seen a hive of red-shirt activity, as well as other strongholds in the lead-up to the trial.

Pol Maj Gen Phiraphong said a 700-strong security force made mostly of soldiers was recently dispatched to Udon Thani but that their main focus there was attending annual training on national crisis management, which ends tomorrow.

The strict security will stay in place until after the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions hands down its verdict on Friday, he said.

At the court compound on Friday, officers will be required to inspect every person who enters the court and strictly regulate traffic in the area.

Visitors can expect metal detectors and body scanners, Pol Maj Gen Phanurat said, adding up to 40 security cameras will be installed.

Drivers must use the entrance near the Administrative Court in the same compound, officials said.
Viel Feind,viel Ehr? Nee!
Man hätte alle Ausländer (besonders englischsprechende Farang)
in Vorbeugehaft nehmen müssen.

Yingluck no-show, court issues arrest warrant

It is not certain if she has fled or not. But she is a former prime minister, some officials may have lent her a helping hand,” Gen Prawit said.

“She may be really ill. The court issued the arrest warrant, so we must look for her,” he said.
A Supreme Court on Friday issues an arrest warrant against former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra after she missed a verdict in a negligence trial involving her rice-pledging scheme.

The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions postponed reading the verdict to September 27 and ordered the seizure of the bail guarantee of Bt30 million.
She is scheduled to arrive at the Court on Changwattana Road at 9am but she was no show, prompting the court to issue the arrest warrant. If Yingluck still fails to show up on September 27, the Court is allowed by law to read the verdict in her absentia.

Lead judge Cheep Chulamon told the Court that Yingluck’s lawyer said she is sick from Meniere's disease and asked to delay the ruling without presenting medical certification of her sickness.

He said the defendant's lawyers had requested for a deferment of the verdict delivery, reasoning that Yingluck was suffering from symptoms of Meniere's Disease.

The prosecutor, Cheep said, objected and did not believe that because the defendant had not submitted a medical certificate.

The court considered the request and decided not to believe the claim that she was so unwell that she could not attend the hearing, Cheep said.

The court was convinced Yingluck had absconded and so ordered to issue an arrest warrant and seize the Bt30 million bail, he said.

The verdict is rescheduled to September 27 at 9 am.

The reading of the statement took less than one minute and the ruling panel left the courtroom immediately after it was finished.

Outside the Court room, Yingluck's lawyer; Norawich Larlang he was informed by a source at 8 am this morning that Yingluck is not unwell. Norawich said he did not know Yingluck's whereabouts or whether or not she is still in the Kingdom or not.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan confirms that he has been informed about Yingluck’s no-show in the court on a claim of sickness.

Noppadol Pattama, former foreign minister under Yingluck’s government claimed he has no knowledge on Yingluck's delayed arrival.
Jolly good show und jeder weiss Bescheid!
