Democrats dominate city polls

The Democrat Party has swept 10 out of 14 districts in Bangkok's district councillor elections, while the Puea Thai Party won three.

Voters line up at a polling station in Bang Khen district yesterday to vote in the Bangkok district elections. Elections were held in 14 districts, with the Democrat Party winning 10 of them. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD

The only district that was split between the two parties in yesterday's elections was Min Buri, where the Democrats won four seats and Puea Thai won three.

Seventy-nine Democrat candidates won all district councillor seats in Bang Kapi, Lat Phrao, Bung Kum, Wang Thonglang, Saphan Sung, Bang Khen, Chatuchak, Laksi, Sai Mai and Khlong Sam Wa, while 26 Puea Thai candidates won all seats in Don Muang, Lat Krabang and Kannayao districts.

Ong-art Klampaibul, head of the Democrat MPs for Bangkok, thanked voters for electing candidates from the party.

He said the party won nearly three times as many district councillor seats in this election than it did four years ago when only 27 councillors in four Bangkok districts were Democrats.

He said yesterday's success was the result of the party's hard work.

Meanwhile, Puea Thai MP for Bangkok Anudit Nakhonthap complained that balloting stations had been relocated in communities that were part of his party's voting base and eligible voters had not been informed of the move in advance.

Puea Thai candidates had previously dominated councillor seats in 11 of the 14 Bangkok districts.

There were 1,468,354 eligible voters in the 14 districts but only 542,955, or 37.42%, turned out to vote yesterday.

The highest voter turnout, 45.69%, was in Kannayao district. Chatuchak district saw the lowest turnout with 33.3%.

The "no-vote" box was checked on 37,408 ballots, or 6.89% of all votes. There were 2,668 invalid ballots, which accounted for 0.49% of all votes.

Deputy city clerk Thaweesak Dejdecho said the election was problem free and voter turnout had surpassed expectations of 35%.
