#1 Neue Fahrradwege in Bangkok!

THE BANGKOK Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is planning to fully revive 10 bicycle routes as part of a scheme to reinvigorate the capital's 35 bikeways.
Information on the revival plan, and on the support needed from various parties, will be presented at a day magazine's "a day BIKE FEST 2013" at the Airport Rail Link's Makkasan Station. The event runs until Sunday.

"Whether these bicycle lanes will be a success depends on cooperation from people, local communities and police," Threedow Aphaiwongs said in her capacity as chair of the We Love Bangkok: We Love Bicycles Committee.

As many as 35 bicycle routes have been created in Bangkok to date. However, contrary to their founding objectives, they are little used by bicyclists these days.

"Some cars park on bicycle lanes," Apichart Tiankaew pointed out.

This 31-year-old engineer has been cycling along the bicycle route in Bangkok's Bang Khunthien district for years now.

He said the 10 routes, including one in Bang Khunthien, due for full revival, are among the existing 35 bicycle-lane routes.

"We hope to start improving these 10 routes early next year. After the work is completed, Bangkok residents should be able to enjoy better bicycle lanes," she said.

If all 35 bicycle-lane routes are fully restored, Bangkok's bicycle lanes will stretch for well over 200 kilometres.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra has a policy to provide bicycling as an alternative means of transport for city people.

"Bicycling can reduce pollution and travel expenses," Threedow said.

BANGKOK CITY HALL is working hard to finish the initial phase of the bicycle lane project at Rattanakosin Island in time for the celebration of His Majesty the King's birthday in two weeks.
"I will try to complete it by this year's end, or by December 5 if possible," Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday.

The first 8-kilometre route starts at the Civic Plaza in front of City Hall and winds through Inner Ratchadamnoen Avenue, the Jessada Bodin plaza, Tanao, Kanlayanamaitree, Sanam Chai, Thai Wang, Maha Raj, Na Prathat, Rachinee and Phra Arthit roads, and ends at Suan Santi Chaiprakarn Park.

Good progress with this project has been achieved, he said.

Enforcement of the parking ban on bike lanes must be stepped up, and all of those agencies involved in reducing violations will have a hand in this effort.
A Bangkok Metropolitan Administration source said four more bicycle lanes would be made available by the end of next year covering a distance of 30km.

The selected lanes will be built near or along Sathorn and Lat Phrao roads, both in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district, as well as Bang Khunthien Beach Road and a rotary around the King Taksin the Great monument on the Thon Buri side.

PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday opened a cycle route in Bangkok's Rattanakosin Island. The premier invited the public to travel by bike and called on motorists to follow the traffic rules.
Prayut presided over the opening ceremony of the 8-kilometre cycling route, which is the first complete cycle route in Bangkok. The opening ceremony was attended by deputy premiers, armed forces chiefs, the Bangkok governor as well as the public. The route is intended to be the government's New Year present for the people.

After the opening ceremony, Prayut led a bike ride on the route, starting at King Rama III Memorial Park. He also urged motorists to be mindful of cyclists, while advising cyclists to ride carefully.

The route covers are on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, Tanao Road, Bamrung Muang, Kalayana Maitri, Sanam Chai, Thai Wang, Maha Rat, Na Phra Lan, Na Phra That, Rachini, Phra Athit, Phra Sumen, and Sip Sam Hang roads.

Launching the route, Prayut said he wanted to promote safe cycling as a part of everyday life because it saved money and reduced pollution.
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/new/201 ... 01_big.jpg

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha promised on Friday more bicycle lanes to cover all corners of Bangkok.
Fresh from pedalling on Rattanakosin island last week, the prime minister said in his first Returning Happiness to Thai People programme of the year he would outline the bike plan for the capital. Five...
additional lanes covering 10 kilometres will be added this year for bikers and more will be built in Thon Buri and other areas across the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, he said. Bangkok has 31 bike routes...

A B E R :

Airports of Thailand PLC and Siam Commercial Bank PLC have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on upgrading bicycle lane around the airport to world class quality with high safety standards.
As parts of the projects, the lanes' opening hours will be extended and convenient facilities will be built to accommodate both novice and veteran cyclists.

The lane will also become the first night riding track in Thailand as well.

The Nation

Latest figures show that more than two million Thais regularly cycle, mostly upcountry to be sure, though Bangkok and its suburbs now boast 150,000 biking enthusiasts, with the figure continuing to rise.

In recent months, the city has seen the launch of the green cycle track at Suvarnabhumi Airport and the technical single-track at Club 11 Bike Club as well as a bike lane under the expressway.

The latest to join the club is Peppermint Bike Park, a mountain-biking trail in Soi Yothin Phatthana in the Lat Phrao area.

"I had the idea for the bike park when I started riding a bike," says Suwanna Eiampikul, chief executive of Bertram Chemical (1982) and a second-generation member of the family that produces Siang Pure natural pain relief products in medicated oil, balm and inhaler form.

"I've been into sports since I was a child and love basketball, volleyball, tennis and golf. But whilst my favourites are still tennis and golf, they are not sports I can play with my staff because of the costs involved. Then I started riding a bike and it dawned on me that this was something everyone could enjoy. I wanted my staff to enjoy the freedom of cycling, of having the wind in their faces. Cycling is both a sport and a way of life."

Peppermint Bike Park is spread over 10 rai of land owned by Suwanna's father. It has cost Bt70 million to set up - Bt40 million for the bike park itself and Bt30 million for the facilities. These include a café, showers and restrooms as well as a parking lot for 100 cars.

"The land was originally slated for a kindergarten, a housing estate or a golf course. I'm using it to connect with my Peppermint Field brand," says Suwanna, who uses Peppermint Bike for morale-boosting bike trips and offers soft loans to her staff so they can buy their own two wheelers.

"We use this bike park as our meeting point. It helps us stay in touch with the nature."

The point-to-point trail takes its cue from Bangkok's Club 11 Bike Club as well as mountain-biking trails overseas. The initial paved trail with man-made ramps and pump tracks as well as some inclines and sharp curves has now been expanded to include a north shore trail and a sheer drop.

"Three weeks after the opening, I starting receiving calls from companies asking me to work as a consultant! But it's important to realise that a bike park isn't profitable. If you measure its index with a KPI (key performance indicator) in terms of money, it is impossible to earn a profit. But it scores high on happiness so it goes well with our brand," says Suwanna.
The trail is safe though caution is required especially through the rougher points. For the beginner, it offers a training course at four levels, priced at Bt500 an hour. There are 10 bicycles for rent for Bt100 per hour and helmets too at a reasonable Bt50.

Peppermint Bike Cafe, which is expected to open at the end of the year, will be on two levels. Food and drinks will be available on the first floor while the second floor will house a bike shop.

"My satisfaction from building and running the bike park comes from the happiness it gives to others. Many international schools are bringing their students here. I enjoy being able to give and I'm so happy to see more and more people turning to cycling.

"That's one of the reasons I keep the fees low, just Bt150 for daytime use and Bt200 for the night session. Right now, I have a group of foreign teenagers coming four days a week. If the fee were higher, it would be too expensive for them.

Cyclists take to the streets en masse for Car-Free Day
Chutima Inkam
The Nation September 21, 2015 1:00 am
MANY parts of Thailand observed the Car-Free Day yesterday, with cyclists making their presence felt in Bangkok, Songkhla, Rayong and other parts of the country.
In the capital, a cycling event organised by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and partners attracted more than 30,000 participants.

"We hope people will cut down on the use of private cars. We wish to encourage Bangkok residents to consider other means of transport," Bangkok Governor MR Subhumbhand Paribatra said at the launch of Bangkok Car-Free Day 2015.

During the event, more than 30,000 people cycled an eight-kilometre stretch from the starting point at Sanam Luang.

Some of the participants said they had joined this annual event in Bangkok many times before.

"I have also cycled to my office," one participant said.

Some other cyclists, however, said they probably could not use their bicycles as their primary means of transport in daily life.

"I think cycling is good for health and the environment. But it's not practical on weekdays," one of the participants said.

Lumpini Park bauen lassen.
