On Saturday, November 10, 1956, at 7 in the morning, I started my jeep for a long journey . While my friend and roommate Rudy ran around looking for the best spot from which to take my picture, I pondered deeply.

http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq19 ... ietnam.jpg

About one month earlier I had started planning this two week vacation. I was going to go with Charles, who after our successful trip to Latya had become a jeep-fan. Everything seemed to be fine when suddenly he had to take over the job of a colleague who had fallen ill. I had tried two other friends, because it was impossible to delay this local leave, but twice the sad story repeated itself that a friend had to opt out because of problems at the job, and I had run out of candidates. Against advice and my own good judgment, I decided nevertheless to go by myself, and started the drawnout procedure of obtaining visa for Cambodja, Vietnam and Laos, as well as a re-entry permit for Thailand. I also tried to pump various legations and embassies for travel information and maps and travelguides, which proved particularly unsuccessful because no one appeared to know a thing. I even got angry looks when I enquired about rebels.
With visa for the three "Indo-Chinese" countries in my pocket and a beautiful letter of introduction, written in French, secured from the Netherlands Legation, I determined the following trajectory: Bangkok, Nakorn Nayok, Aranyaprathet -crossing into Cambodja, Angkor Wat, Pnom Penh - cross into Vietnam, Saigon, Dalat, to the coast of the South China Sea and along the old Mandarin Road northwards as far as Hue- close to communist North Vietnam. From there, I wanted to head inland again and cross the Mekong river into Laos. Following the Mekong upriver, I hoped to pass Nakorn Panom on the way to the capital Vientiane, which just at that time was undergoing rapid development because of considerable U S economic aid injections (our customer Siew Lieng Hang even offered me a bank manager's job there where I would do such things as importing seawater in used whiskey bottles, anything to tap the dollar…). If time allowed, I might visit Luang Prabang, if not, I'd cross the Mekong again into Thailand and return to Bangkok via Korat. By the way, the only map I could find was one labeled "Birma and Indo-China" which did show Thailand but not in its title…

2te Seite kriege ich leider nicht auf ????
Also, die 3te ...

At my left, the hills started to become higher and higher, continuing to the Mekong river where they constitute part of the border between Thailand and Cambodja. There are dense forests here packed with wild animals, including tigers, buffaloes and elephants. Numerous waterfalls feed small rivers flowing either into the Menam Sa Keo, which flows through ChaCherngSao and debouches into the Gulf of Siam, or into the Tonle Sap, or Grand Lake, in Cambodja, which joins the Mekong River at Pnom Penh. (there are some interesting seasonal fluctuations between the mighty Mekong which originates in the Himalayas, and Tonle Sap which supports or supported stupendous fisheries as well as irrigationworks for rice culture.)

Somewhere along the road a bus was parked with a leaking gas tank, surrounded by a number of patiently waiting Thai who are well accustomed to such matters. But there were some impatient exceptions who were on a schedule and apparently had to get somewhere.

Those filled up my jeep, and showed me the resulting big differences in driving characteristics. A sergeant major of the police, a saylor and a student sat in the front and bombarded me with questions. http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq19 ... hikers.jpgAt a roundabout, I stopped and asked a farmer to take a picture of the jeep and its occupants, which seemed to make him feel inordinately proud for the rest of the day.

At Nakorn Nayok, a pleasant small town full of samlors, all but the policeman alighted and were on their way. The two of us continued via numerous emergency bridges which fortunately were quite save, till we got to a fork in the road. Here the policeman played me a dirty trick because he had to go the other way, which would cause me only 5 minutes delay, he said. In reality, it was some 15 kms out of my way, but I took him to Prachinburi and because it was lunch time, anyhow, he treated me to a bottle of beer and a bowl of rice. I invested the money I saved that way buying some native sunburn oil. Mileage here was 64276, and I gassed up for 50 ticals (baht) again at one of the many gasstations appearing like mushrooms from the ground all over the countryside.

4te

The road here was like a zinc washing board, one continuous wavey surface covered with reddish gravel. Someone told me that this is caused by the foundation of the road, using treetrunks laid crossways. Most of the Thai roads are similar – with the exception of the new American-built strategic highway I described from an earlier trip. At a speed of some 60 km/hr, driving is pleasant, while at lower speeds everything rattles. Going that fast, however, it is easy to skid, and numerous narrow bridges make things hazardous. Fortunately, this road was fairly straight without bridges and sharp corners.
If a road runs parallel with a railroad, it is customary to economize and to use a single bridge for both to cross. The train has the advantage, while cars have to suffer from the poor track. Nails stick out centimeters above loose planks and boards, while gaps between them are measured in decimeters.
At Sapan Dam, or "Black Bridge", I watched intently how my front tire passed precariously between two protruding nails. Deep down I clearly saw a small river with two alluring beaches along its banks.
It was by now so hot that I took off all my clothes and only wore swimming trunks. I smeared the newly acquired "suntanlotion" onto my back without realizing at first that it was rather evil smelling and fishy, so it was good my passengers had gotten off in time.

At one of the small villages along the ribbleroad I got out for a quick iced coffee, and here I also hid away the bundle of dollars which I had smuggled along from Bangkok. I had been told how easy it would be to have a free trip from profits made by money exchange, which prospect had induced me to take along all of US$ 40 – all I could afford at the time.

5te

Around 6 p.m, I suddenly reached Aranyaprathet, a small bordertown. I saw several cute poney carts filled with schoolkids who screamed to me excitedly: "OK !", instead of the usual "Pharang". American influence, thus, rather than French (from which derives the word 'pharang')
http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq19 ... rathet.jpg
However, nothing was ok, because after tanking once again, the jeep refused to start. The gasstation owner tried something, which made it go for a short distance only, and in the middle of my turn back the engine stopped once again and I was sitting across the narrow road on top of a dike. Two men were about to help, gbut while I climbed out of the jeep, it started to move and before I could do anything, it rolled down into the ditch. In retrospect, this was rather funny – dumb, of course, not to have used the handbrake –
But at the time I was rather annoyed that the two men did not raise a hand to stop the jeep but just stood there with bulging eyes watching the drama unfold. We did manage to start the engine, but the wheels turned uselessly in the thin mud and I turned off the engine when I only worked our way deeper and deeper in the mud and risked getting water in the engine and my boots.
Half an hour later, a cranetruck dragged us out with much swearing and ruinig only the bumper and not the steering wheel and its appurtenances.
In the meantime it had turned dark and so looked my future. In a series of timy forward shocks I made it into town where I was referred to a dirty small garage of which the boss, however, did inspire confidence. He immediately started work for hours without any help, even though a group of noisy teenagers hung around and drank so much that they started to become obnoxious on this Saturday night.

Copy und Paste macht keinen Spass .....

I took off with a friendly Chinese neighbor, who surprised me by closing his own shop –unthinkable – and showed me around the town, stopping for numerous ice coffees and visiting the captain of the customs who stamped my passport and documents. Although I appeared to miss some necessary document for my jeep – in Bangkok I had been told that the "red card" was sufficient – it took me a half hour of de-rinking we-whiskey with him while trying to talk with him in French and with his wife in Malaysian before he consented to let me go on, although he also invited me to be his guest overnight. This offer I attribute to the many toffees I handed out to the entire family, so that my critical friends in Bangkok who had given me the can of toffees indirectly contributed to the success of my trip …
Walking back to the workshop I figured out a reasonable fee for the repair job. Exactly at midnight, the job was done. Two drunken boys undertook the negotiations on behalf of the owner-mechanic who just let them. They asked about three times as much as I had figured, and I could barely get the owner to speak until a policemen became involved and we settled for my estimate. The four of them decided to spend some of this on a late night dinner and were so kind as to invite me along.
Because of all this delay, I decided not to stay in the town and in the middle of the night I drove on, passing the borderpost with one of my new friends who went inside and interpreted the mumbling of the sleepy guard as consent for me to cross.
http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq19 ... jasign.jpg
From here it was some 8 kms to the Cambodjan counterpart borderpost, so that I stopped halfway in this No Man's Land to pitch my tent. Notwithstanding the delays, I had done 210 miles that day, and the counter showed 64377.
End of First Day
I slept very well !

Vielen Dank!
